Tonight not only brings us the most anticipated football game of the year, but also a chance for two rivaling schools to fight it out, off the field, and in a positive manner. During halftime of the Centralia-Chehalis football game tonight, students from both schools will participate in various halftime activities.
Assistant Principal Ron Franklin said, "They (halftime games) provide an opportunity for both schools to be involved in fun and constructive competitions." Class presidents picked students who were interested in participating. The events that students can expect to see are the three legged race, obstacle course, tug of war, team ski, relay race, and the traditional bed race.
Students from both Chehalis and Centralia enjoy the halftime games. Centralia ASB President Kelsey LeDuc said, "They're entertaining and they promote school spirit." W.F. West ASB Vice-President Alison Smith enjoys the halftime games because she "likes beating Centralia, and seeing them lose." Rashmi Puri, a Centralia senior, said, "They enhance the rivalry between Centralia and Chehalis get me excited for the game to start again." Some people believe these games show who is the better high school. "W. F. West is better because we can beat them in anything," said sophomore Brad Gowing.
The annual halftime games give students, who possibly don't have the opportunity to compete against Centralia, the chance to be involved in the rivalry. Sophomore Breanna Langford said, "Centralia and Chehalis have always been rivals and the halftime games involve all students, not necessarily the athletes." These games also serve another purpose: to get students excited for the second half of the football game. Centralia sophomore Heather Miller said, "If we win the halftime games, it makes the real game much more intense." Centralia senior Cory Parker agreed. "The games get everyone pumped up."
The halftime activities all lead up to the climax of the games, the bed race. In the past few years, W.F West has graduated from a rickety, old, and rusty bed, to last year's three-wheeled controversial winner. Centralia's bed is a symbol of Tiger spirit. In past years, students who exhibited great spirit were rewarded with the opportunity to sit on the bed during various activities.
What is the outlook for tonight's bed race? Puri believes that Centralia will prevail. "We always win, and we have an awesome orange and black bed." Gowing disagrees. "W.F. West will definitely win because we have the best bed in the country, and it looks good." Some believe that these games are not as much competition, rather a way to bring students together for a higher purpose. "The more we can do as schools to have fun competitions, the more barriers we can break down," said Franklin.
