Baywatch:

Big on bodies, small on plot

dot.gif - 0.0 K The beautiful beaches of southern California; home to sand, sun, and Baywatch. The introduction to this show is filled with scenes of gorgeous women and hot men running down the beach in swimsuits; enough to make any red-blooded American want to watch. But good-looking lifeguards and a great beach setting are all that this show has to offer.

dot.gif - 0.0 K First, the plot. There really isn't one. This, to me, is the worst part of the show. I'm certain that the show would be much more entertaining if it had some sort of story line that continued throughout the year.

dot.gif - 0.0 K While attractive characters don't take anything away from the series, the terrible acting does. It's fairly obvious that one, maybe more, of these actors never went to drama school. Are they attractive? Absolutely. But they can't act, and it shows.

dot.gif - 0.0 K Also, there's a slight lack of realism in the extras. Are we actually supposed to believe that everyone on the beaches of California is gorgeous? It certainly wasn't like that when I visited.

dot.gif - 0.0 K The rescues are also bad. It seems like the four times that I watched the show, I saw the same rescue about twelve times. Couldn't they at least think of some new kind of emergency that needs six speedboats and twenty life guards in order to resolve? I mean, please.

dot.gif - 0.0 K Also, one man who falls off his surfboard, (and can very obviously swim) deŽnitely does not require the help of all the lifeguards from the western United States and Canada. Overkill, maybe?

dot.gif - 0.0 K There are good things, though. You have to admit, even if the plot line lacks a point, the good-looking characters make up for it at least a little bit. Also, the setting of a beautiful beach in California is definitely a plus for the show. However, attractive actors and a beautiful setting don't make up for a poor script and a lame plot line. Running up and down the beach in bathing suits is no plot for a show.
