School's out, so what are you going to do? " I'm going to Disney World!"
This summer, 177 W.F. West choir, band and strings students are doing just that. June 26 at 8:45 A.M. they'll be off the ground on their way to Orlando.
The group will spend 10 days visting historic sites and amusement parks. Many have goals that they plan to achieve on the trip. " I might try to go on all the big roller coasters, as long as someone goes with me," said sophomore Brooke Muhich.
The choir, band and strings are going to perform at Disney's Market Place, and the band is going to march down Main Street, USA. " It will be fun in the Independance Parade, but it will be hot. The uniforms are black wool," said sophomore Peter Craig.
The groups will also perform at the Ellipse (a waiting area for people touring the White House). Last time W.F. West was scheduled to put on a show at the Ellipse, it was canceled. "We are hoping that there is no rain this year at the Ellipse so we can sing," said Mr. David Judd, choir director.
Four people will be selected to participate in a wreath laying ceremoney at the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cememony. The four will have to earn the honory task of laying the wreath in W.F. West's name. They will have to write an essay telling why they want to be chosen. It has yet to be decided who the four will be.
Although the trip will undoubtedly be the highlight of some students' school music careers, it seems that some students have remained involved in music only because of this trip. "After the band trip a lot of people are going to quit," said Angela French.
Nevertheless, most students are very positive about the experience. "IÔve been looking forward to D.C. ever since they told me back in 6th grade," said Vernon Keech. Many are anticipating the stops along the way, such as Colonial Willamsburg, Busch Gardens, Epcot Center, Mt Veron, Kennedy Center, and the Jefferson, Lincoln and Ulysses Grant Memorials.
