Not a familiar sight

Do you remember those showers in the middle of the W. F. West locker rooms? Those gray tiled areas that were built half a decade ago? You may be wondering why they look so new, because they rarely get used by anyone.
to shower or not to shower, that's the question.

Forty-Five minutes of "fun runs" ( Many students wonder why they call them that) apparently around the gym up and down the stairs isn't enough to get this generation's high-schoolers to strip down and wash off the sweat. "After conditioning people should shower. I think it's sick when people wear the same clothes every day, get all sweaty and never use the showers," senior Mike Pierson explained.

"The only time I took a shower at school was after the Powder Puff game with my clothes on, because I'm not into showering with 30 other girls," said sophomore Misti Riddle.

Nurse Marlyn Fenn said, "Modesty may be the reason many students don't shower. High-schoolers aren't confident with other people looking at their bodies," she said.

Modesty may be the reason many students don't shower. "No one wants to take a shower naked around everyone else," said freshmen Kelly Neeley.

The guys seem to have less of a dilemma when it comes to dropping their trunks. Girls are constantly bombarded by images of so-called perfection in magazines, television and film. Boys may not feel such pressure about their appearance. "Girls have a lot more trouble with self esteem, perhaps not maintaining some media requirement," said Nurse Marilyn Fenn.

Sophomore Kim Plancich said, "There isn't enough time to shower because you have to do your hair and make-up again."

Some say more time and privacy would help others say a better design. " It's too open. Like everyone would be watching you," said sophomore Natalie Roe. "I think that people would use them if they had curtains," said freshman Christa Wood. Many W. F. West students believe this statement to be true.

Dr. Linda Smith responded, "Curtains were never brought up when the showers were being designed. [But] it is a possibility."
