Carol Haines Left W.F. West
Carol Haines left W.F. West on March 13th to pursue a job as a supervisor in a department at an Environmental Chemistry lab. She left because she couldn't afford to teach; she is a single parent with two teenagers with college on the horizon. Haines said, "I'd really rather teach. I'm going to miss everyone, especially the kids." Mr. Harfst is her replacement.
DECA State Results
On March 5th, 6th, and 7th eight students in DECA participated in the state competition. Randy Neal participated in the employment acquisition category. Karen Muller and Erin Taylor competed in the hospitality and tourism management category. Bryan Raymour and Mark Sobolesky won first place in the website development category. Jake Thompson and Derek Jolliff won second place in the multimedia presentations category. Heather Lane was the top eighth finisher in the food marketing written test and hands on event, She was ninth overall out of 64 competitors.
State Solo Ensemble Contest
On March 14th several musicians won first place at the Regional competition and will continue onto the state competition in Ellensburg on April 24th and 25th. Lesley Beckman is the Flute Champion for the 3rd year. Andy Judd is the Trombone Champion. Lindsay and Lesley Beckman won the Woodwind Ensemble Championship. Marcus Dugaw, Andy Judd, Monica Judd, and Susan Mittge won the Brass Ensemble Championship.
State Vocal Contest
On February 28th several vocalists competed in the Regional vocal competition. Jenni Adams won first as an alto and will be traveling to Ellensburg for the state competition. Kristina Ziese was awarded Ūrst alternate in the mezzo soprano division. Andy Judd received Ūrst alternate as a baritone.
FBLA State Conference
On April 23rd to the 25th several students will be competing in the State conference in categories such as accounting, business procedures, business calculations, scrapbook, entrepreneurship, and intro to impromptu speaking. Mike Oechsner, Jenny Bell, Karen Muller, Amirah Parker, Angela French, Brandy Maul, Travis Frasier, Meagan Hillier, David Langehennig, Erin Taylor, and Van Chau competed at Regionals and will progress onto state.
New Baby
Elizabeth Helen Schaefer, "Ellie" was born on St. Patrick's Day at 6:25 PM. She weighed 7 lbs 5 oz. and was 20 inches long. Mike and Tracie Schaefer are the proud parents.
National Journalism Conference
On April 16th to the 19th six members of the Crimson & Gray staff and nine members of the Annual staff will travel to Seattle to compete in the National Journalism Conference. They will be competing in writing, art, photography, and layout, as well as overall excellence.
Pen Drive
Over 11,000 pens were collected for the children in Zimbabwe. Mr. Bedford's second period class won the donut party by collecting 567 pens. "We collected more pens than I had ever expected," said coordinator Julie O'Connor.
