If you don't have a date to Tolo and plan to spend the evening at home watching reruns of Green Acres, put down that TV Guide. Instead of boring yourself with bad hee-haw accents you can go enjoy some really great blues.
On Saturday, March 21, Kelly Joe Phelps, the legendary blues guitarist will play a set at Chehalis' own Red Dawg Brewpub. Phelps plays with a unique, dobro style. Instead of holding the guitar upright like most guitarists, he holds the guitar flat on his lap, picking and sliding simultaneously. He uses his right hand on the body of the guitar creating a percussive rhythm. Phelps' excellent guitar playing is matched by his equally stunning vocals. Billboard described Phelps in a review, "His husky, baritone is invariably affecting, with his guitar serving as a moving second voice."
"Some of the richest country blues to be heard in a while. Phelps sings with a stubborn faith and a soul-comforting honesty that's as timeless as bad luck and trouble." quoted the Philadelphia Inquirer in a recent review. He recently did a 16 city tour with BB King and has also opened for Little Feat, Robben Ford, Leo Kottke, and Keb Mo', among others. Kelly Joe has toured four European countries and played at many North American festivals, including; Philadelphia Folk, Utah Jazz & Blues, Eureka Springs Blues, Winnipeg Folk, and the Toronto Jazz and Blues Festival. "At first you think it's familiar then you know you've never heard anything like this. I love this music." said performer, Leo Kottke.
You won't want to miss this special night. Tickets are $10, and reservations are strongly recommended if you want to have a seat.
