There are three public fitness centers located near downtown Chehalis, if you should choose to take advantage of extra fitness classes and machines available.
Located downtown on Market Street is Fitness Plus, which is a branch of Thorbeck's Fitness Center, that offers personal training by ACE certified trainers. It also offers the Advantage Program which gives you access to Parkside Fitness Center in Centralia's Fort Borst Park and Centralia's Indoor Pool. Parkside also has a full length basketball court available upstairs.
Southside Fitness Center is located on the corner of 18th Street and Market Street in Chehalis. Southside has a rockclimbing wall upstairs and boxing available downstairs. Bonnie Folwell is an owner and trainer along with her husband at Southside. Folwell has a degree in fitness and nutrition and has been a body builder for many years.
There were many reasons why they chose the building up the street from W.F. West to be the location for Southside, but one reason was very significant to Folwell and her husband. She said, "They needed one [fitness center] in Chehalis."
Many of the students are pleased to see a fitness center so close to the high school. Sophomore Kim Kestner said, "It [Southside] is a convenient location with clean new machines."
Many have found that in order to find results they need to be dedicated. Folwell said, "Consistency is the whole key. Being around people helps you stick to it. Fitness is a commitment for life."
Hilltop Fitness Center is also located in Chehalis on Kresky Road just past Coal Creek Road. It offers a variety of machines and a kickboxing class.Carss has been to Hilltop on several occasions and has experience at other centers as well. Carss said, "Fitness centers are more personal than social because you're working on yourself. I think that if you go there voluntarily then you'll get more out of it than if you're forced to go."
Fitness centers usually offer cheaper rates to people who purchase memberships and other deals throughout the year to members of their health club. Sophomore Kim Kestner said, "It's motivating to have a membership at one [fitness center] because you have to go so that you won't waste your money."
Still, some people aren't convinced that fitness centers are the answer to being a healthy person. Freshman Mike Mohr said, "You don't necessarily have to go to fitness centers to be healthy. You just go out and have fun."
