People don't read. You know what I'm talking about. You're in class, the teacher asks someone to read a paragraph or something, and they make a fool of themselves trying to sound out words and syllables. If only these people would read books on their own, they could increase their reading ability and not be embarrassed in class.
One cause of below-level reading is the lack of good books in Ūrst grade, when all this reading business started. "See Spot run" basically sums up the entire plot of Ūrst-year trainers. Granted, vocabulary levels are very low, but couldn't the author have had Spot do a little more than run? Maybe Spot should go play baseball with his friends or go to a movie or something.
Incoherent ravings are certainly not reasons to avoid reading, just more reasons to start reading in the first place. The key here is: just get a book that looks interesting and read it. Go to the library, go to the bookstore, whatever. Just find some sort of reading material. It's not that hard, you might enjoy yourself, and (gasp) you might even learn something.
To those people who would say that they don't read because no book interests them, well, go to the theater. Watch a movie. If you like it, go to the bookstore and look for the book. If they have it, buy it. More often than not, the book is better than the movie.
Reading is cheap, entertaining and will improve your mind. I don't see why more people don't do it.
