FAQ - Fixing TCP/IP errors

The most common reason for this error is that your tcp/ip protocol is malfunctioning. The solution for this is very simple, reinstall it. The other common reason is bad phone lines. If this is the case there isn't much you can do except have US West come out and check your phone line.a

In order to fix your tcp/ip protocol you need to have your copy of Windows 95.

Go to the start button usually located on the bottom left of your screen. From there move up to "settings," and over to "control panels."

In Control Panels double click on the icon labeled "NETWORK." You will then be presented with a screen that shows you the components that you have installed for your networking capabilities. You should see "dial up adapter" and "tcp/ip." You might see more than that and this is ok.

Highlight tcp/ip by clicking once on it and then click on the button that says "REMOVE." After you have removed the old copy of tcp/ip you need to click on the button that says "ADD." You then need to select "PROTOCOL" and hit "add" again. Next you need to click on the manufacturer, in this case, Microsoft. After you have highlighted Microsoft you will see a list of protocols on the right. Highlight tcp/ip and click "OK." You then need to click "OK" again and you will be prompted to restart your computer after the necessary files are installed.

After you restart your computer you just need to dial back up and you will then be able to browse the internet without any trouble.

If this does not help your trouble it means that you have static in your phone line that is degrading your phone line quality. As before the only solution to this is to call US West and have them come out and look things over. *tip* if you do have them come over tell them that you are noticing problems on your voice end also as this will greatly speed up the service given.
