For each of the major sacraments, we have either a Sponsor or a Godparent. Sponsors are for Confirmation and those in the RCIA process. Godparents are for Baptism. The role of each is to assist the person along their journey of faith, not just fr the event itself. It is a time to get to know the person, assist them with many questions, and to pray for them throughout their life. In the case of Godparents to be supportive to the parents in bringing up this child to be an active participant within the faith community. There need be only one Godparent but two are generally chosen.

REQUIREMENTS: Any one chosen to be either a Sponsor or a Godparent must be: 1) a fully initiated Catholic, 2) be registered and actively participating in their local faith community, 3), IF not a member of St. Joseph or St. Mary's parish, then a Letter of Verification from their pastor will suffice; 4) not be the parent or the spuse of the candidate.
