Remarriage After Annulment

Everyone who is entering marriage, even if previously married, is entering a unique and new relationship. It is a common misconception that previously married individuals know what to expect in marriage and they need very little preparation. The couple needs to be aware of the new challenges and expectations in a remarriage situation. Statistics tell us that many second marriages are now failing at a higher rate than some first marriages.

As stated previously, anyone who is divorced must obtain a declaration of nullity, which may take a long time, before the remarriage can take place.

The Church calls for preparation for each major sacrament. Preparation for remarriage includes: closure on the first marriage, blending new families whenever necessary, exploring expectations in new marriage, communication skills, and the spirituality of marriage.

This preparation involves: 1) an initial interview with the pastor; 2) completing the Nullity Process if necessary; 3) meeting with a certified marriage counselor; 4) participation in the Preparation Series of classes; 5) planning the marriage ceremony with the Wedding Coordinator; 6) determining the date with the Presider, the priest or deacon.
