Marriage Preparation

The celebration of the sacrament of marriage for a couple is a very joyful moment in the life of the family and of the christian community. The preparation for this life together begins many months and even years before this special day. In our Catholic tradition one of the parties or members of their family must be a member of St. Joseph or St. Mary's parish. If either person has been previously maried, then there are additional procedures to be completed before the marriage date can be set. (See Nullity Process)

Preparation for marriage begins at least six months before the marriage. It includes: 1) an initial interview with the pastor; 2) FOCUS assessment and follow-up interviews to assist the couple in realistically looking at their relationship; 3) a six week series of classes which cover communication, medical, legal, and financial issues and the spirituality of marriage; 4) working with the Wedding Coordinator in planning out the liturgical part of their wedding to make it a prayerful and meaningful celebration of the sacrament for family and friends. Classes are held several times a year.

Weddings usually take place on the weekends, Friday night or early Saturday. Because of other parish liturgical events, the church is not available after 3 PM on Saturday. No weddings can take place on Sundays or holy days. It is necessary to work with the parish calendars to determine not only space available, but the time available for priest or deacon presider for the wedding.
