| Sacrament
of Anointing
The
sacrament of Anointing was formerly known as Extreme Unction or Last Rites.
This was always associated with one's final preparation for death. The
sacrament of anointing is not to be conferred on a person who is already
dead. So we ask that you do not wait until the very last moment to
call a priest.
Since
Vatican II implemented a new format which now includes the pastoral
care of those who are sick, by bringing Communion to them and anointing
the person with oil as a sign of healing, and praying with
and for them. A sick person may be anointed before surgery, whenever serious
illness is present. The elderly and those who are chronically ill,
especially children, may receive this sacrament more than
once.
Generally,
the sacrament of Anointing is conferred twice a year when the faith
community is gathered, during Advent and during Lent. At these times, those
whose physical condition is in a chronic spiritual or physical condition
of illness are invited to come forward to receive this sacrament. |
