Teaching Year: September through mid-June (follows Centralia
Public Schools scheduling, also in regards to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring
Breaks)
Summer Lessons: No summer lessons
LESSON INFORMATION
Teaching Days: Monday-Thursday
Lessons: Beginning students have half hour private lessons
plus a half hour class lesson every week. The class lesson focuses on theory
and ear training through a variety of flash cards and games. Older students
have 40 minute weekly lessons except for the last week of most months which
is for small groups. This hour includes performance, music history, literature
and composers.
Practice Policy: Every student has a stamped practice schedule on each assignment
sheet that must be filled out and signed by a parent each week. Practice requirements
range from 3 hours per week for beginners to 5 hours per week for advanced students.
Teaching Materials: Beginners use the Robert Pace Method which is a very
creative, multiple key approach. All piano repertoire is available, including
classics, sacred, and popular.
Studio Facility: In my home, I have a large separate piano studio with
two pianos and a large chalkboard. For performance classes, the grand piano
in the living room is used.
Recitals: We have two sharing times (November & December) and a Spring
Recital. Other opportunities through Lewis County Music Teachers Assocaiton
include the Young Artists Master Series in February, Auditions in March, and
the Ribbon Festival in the Spring.
TEACHER BIOGRAPHY
Teaching Experience: Piano teacher for over 30 years in Olympia, Clarkston,
Walla Walla, and Centralia; Voice teacher for 10 years; Substitute music teacher
at Centralia Christian School - 1995; Pre-School teacher at Happy Day Child
Care Center, Centralia Community Church of God - 1983 to 1990.
Musical Experience: Director of children's and youth choirs/musicals;
English Handbells director; church pianist and vocal soloist and accompanist.
Education Background: Began piano lessons at nine years of age with Olive
Ruark. Continued to study piano with Donald Lehman and voice with William Hazelbauer
and Robert Meadows at Warner Pacific College in Portland. Obtained a Bachelor
of Arts Degree with a major in Christian Education and a minor in Music.
Personal Statement: I love kids and that is probably the main reason for
my teaching. My own two children are grown and my grandchildren live out of
town, so I need some little people close by. My husband, Dallas, and I are involved
in church music where I see the need for good musicianship. Music is a God-given
gift that enriches the lives of the performer and the listener. I enjoy being
a part of this creativity and nurturing. My students, through the years, have
been some of the finest young people I have known. They have character, discipline,
talent and good humor. I thank the Lord for the opportunity to be a part of
this special learning process.
