Violence comes in many many forms and include - name calling, hitting or punching, using weapons, constant put-downs, stalking, isolation, driving away family and friends, and sexual abuse by your partner toward you and/or your children.

There is hope for a victim of domestic violence to start a violence free life, free from abuse. Obtaining a protection order , to keep you and your children safe, can begin the process. Other ways to escape the abuse include entering a shelter, seeking assistance from the police and/or victim's advocate. A comprehensive safety plan should be developed with an advocate.

In Washington State, victims of domestic violence have rights. The victim's right statement from R.C.W. 10.99.030 is as follows.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, you can ask the city or county prosecuting attorney to file a criminal complaint. You also have the right to file a petition in superior, district, or municipal court requesting as order for protection from domestic abuse which could include any of the following:
An order restraining your abuser from further acts of abuse; An order directing your abuser to leave your household; An order preventing your abuser from entering your residence, school, business, or place of employment; An order awarding you or the other parent temporary custody of your minor child or children, and an order restraining your abuser from molesting or interfering with minor children in your custody.
The forms you need to obtain a protection order are available in any municipal, district, or superior court. (The forms in Lewis County are available in the Lewis County Clerk's Office in the courthouse in Chehalis, 360 NW North Chehalis, WA 360-748-9121.)
